it's generally a fun place with friendly people and relatively inexpensive to live compared to other major UK cities. downsides are the weather (if you cant handle low UV and continual rain you will have an issue) and problems with litter and general urban/post-industrial decline affecting large swathes. Most of the city is quite poor, however the city is filled with fine architecture reflecting its victorian heyday. often the better areas are those in which this architecture has survived and not been bulldozed to make way for ill-conceived 'progress' in the 1960s. Most new arrivals would probably aim to live in the west end if they can afford it (although the immediate vicinity of the uni is very overpriced), otherwise the queen's park/shawlands/strathbungo areas of the south side, or on the periphery of the city centre, or some areas to the east such as Dennistoun. Otherwise its mainly suburbs and a few very deprived areas which tend to be on the edges of the city. These can be quieter and cheaper, but it depends on what your budget is and what you are looking for.
