Abundance is a relative term, and relatively compared to most of the rest of Europe / Americas the selection of local fresh produce is quite small as is our consumption of fruit and veg per person.
I dont know what its like in Dubai, but going to the big Tesco in Glasgow when you are used to the local market in Italy is going to find much less choice
