The key issue is that more money is spent dealing with the results of poverty, instead of the causes of it. There is seemingly little desire to actually solve the problem, and while it is admittedly a huge problem to solve - it is far from impossible.
Many years ago, Glasgow engaged in a ferocious and concerted effort to curb its problems with knife crime. Nowadays, the methods developed in our city in those years are used as the blueprint for other cities suffering from a similar problem. Most recently, London.
So, why can we not have as sustained, targeted and combined an effort to tackle the root causes of poverty in our city too? Maybe one day we could provide the blueprint for accurately tackling that problem, too. It doesn't seem too unreasonable a request, given the net benefit to our city that it would result in.
