Once the ticket price is over £10 it doesn't matter if it's peak or off peak, you still get the discount.

Pre-covid I did this commute most weekdays with a railcard and it's always worked.. Prices are always going up but it's currently £17.45 return with a railcard at peak time I believe.

OP, previously I was living at charing cross, and now the west end, which works well as the trains there go directly to queen street to change to the fast train to Edinburgh, or you can take the slow one directly to Edinburgh without having to change. This is all included into the same ticket price you pay from Queen street anyway and is significantly quicker/easier than walking or cycling IMO.
