Personally I didn't mind the commute 4 days-a-week pre-covid, always got a seat no problem and surprisingly it's a very reliable service, the price was the only downside but I took the hit because I don't care to live in Edinburgh.

Now I've been WFH for 5 months, I can't see myself going back to more than 2 days a week commuting, but that's more because it's hard to justify the cost if I clearly don't NEED to be in the office. I do strangely miss the time pre and post work on the commute to wake up/unwind.

Definitely think that charing cross/west end is much better call to live than southside for OP, although you'll definitely pay a bit more rent. City centre is a bit cheaper than west end but more expensive than charing cross, charing cross area might be best of both worlds as you can get to the southside on the train, can walk to the west end and close to train stations
