I used to live in Strathbungo (not that far away from Crossmyloof, used the Queens Park station when I needed a train) and used to commute through to Edinburgh every day.

It's not too onerous apart from the early start and late arrival home. Good news is the buses into Queen Street are generally empty (I used those in preference to the train for the start/end of the commute), bad news is the trains can get rammed, although what things are like during COVID is anyone's guess.

As for renting, depending on *exactly* what you want you should be able to get something decent for around £600pcm Southside, Westend is going to be more like £900pcm (I just had a quick gander on RightMove).

If I were you, I'd look at Edinburgh. The rent may end up being more, but you won't be forking out for tickets (easy enough to arrange meet ups with your pals) and you'll save commuting time. 2hrs per day, 3 days a week @£20ph equates to around £520 per month, depends on how much you value your time really.

If you can (COVID blah, blah) perhaps try and get up to spend ~1 week in each city?
