Best to be avoided unless you’re sure of what you’re having your fire on. In the right conditions and location the hot embers can burn down into the ground and then move along - the fire effectively burrows underground. Extinguishing the fire won’t necessarily be enough if the fire has already spread.

Less chance of this just now are low given the wet weather, but it’s one of the primary reasons for avoiding having a fire on the ground that leaves scorch marks - it’s as much about avoiding this scenario as it is cosmetic.

If want to do this then get yourself a wee fire bucket. They normally come with legs that are long enough to keep the heat away from the ground, small enough to cook a wee bit of food and aren’t so large that you will risk the surroundings igniting.
