Unpopular opinion alert! Are you ready for it?

Drug addicts cause a lot of damage, not just to themselves, but to those around them including their families/children and society in general. And by a lot of damage I mean absolute devastation. Now, I know there is a possibility that they can recover and make something of themselves... but realistically, how many of them actually do that? (That’s a genuine question, btw. I’m happy to be educated.) If they were prevented from overdosing, wouldn’t that just prolong the misery for them and everybody around them until they eventually succumb anyway?
