Plenty of addicts recover. Lots of those recovering addicts then go onto help other addicts recover. What exactly do you mean by "absolute devestation"?
If I'm reading your post correctly you're saying we should do nothing to help them. Correct? The undertones of your post suggests we should actively encourage them to off themselves.
