5 highers is a full timetable for a kid - crashing the exams without doing the course doesn't make a lot of sense either. A big chunk of learning is how to answer the question and how to pass.
Highers are not equal to A Levels, they're worth slightly less and only take one year. From there you can do Advanced Highers which are equal/worth a wee bit more than A Levels.
