I don't know if it's true but I heard someone say that there was only enough money to save the Central Station Hotel or the St Enoch Station Hotel, as they were both in need of expensive restoration.
The Central Station Hotel got picked for restoration, there was no money at the time to restore the St Enoch Hotel so it got demolished instead.
