I searched a database of Glasgow-based counsellors, which had information on their specialisms. (might have been this? https://www.psychologytoday.com/gb/counselling/sct/glasgow) As I (particularly at the time) was struggling with expressing/repressing emotions, I was drawn to someone who used an emotion based approach.

Getting the right match, that's a lot of trial and error... it took me a long time to actually be honest, but the work I did on that helped when I did the individual CBT sessions later (with a different counsellor, things like bringing up whenever I felt like I was being judged, even if I knew I wasn't).

I've found a lot of counsellors pages will detail their specific areas of expertise, which might be their approach, or the situations that they can support. I kind of went into it wanting solutions to issues I faced, but the most useful thing I am learning to do is to notice when I think certain things, feel certain things, that may not be grounded in reality.

It can feel trite when folk congratulate you when you tackle mental health things, but it really is great to aim to address things. If I compare my life now to when I started that counselling stretch (maybe 6 years in all), I still face the same issues, but I definitely feel better about it.
