That's a pretty cushy setup, a lettings company that takes its share of the rent but doesn't seem to actually provide the landlord or tenant with any services in return

Doesn't matter if it's their fault, it's their *responsibility*

However, your contractual responsibility to clean the carpets remains, irrespective of their failure to do gas checks. These issues are not connected to each other. You could report them for the gas safety failues, and they might get fined / struck off the landlord register, but you're not going to see any money from that, and you're still going to have to get the carpets cleaned to get your deposit back. And effectively blackmailing them *might* help, or could just mean a whole world of new problems.

Personally I'd just pay the £50 or whatever it costs to get someone in with a steam cleaner, and then once you have your deposit back report them to the appropriate authorities over the gas safety issue - if only to protect future tenants.
