Drinking in itself isn't really the issue as much as the culture in Scotland of drinking expressly to get shitfaced (there's a similar problem in a lot of northern European countries, it's there in Scandinavia at least).


When I lived in Barcelona it struck me how slowly my Catalan friends would drink on a night out. They would take their time, have a soft drink inbetween, and for large parts of the night always be eating something at least until we went to a club. The nights out were much longer but the drinking was more spread out, mixed with food, and there wasn't this mad race to see who can spew their guts out first that I still see among a lot of perfectly reasonable people back home.
