Statues don't exist to teach history, that's what museums are for. Statues in public places are to honour people, to celebrate individuals or events that we think embody our society's values. If you moved the statues to a museum, and had an exhibit explaining what they did, why they had statues and why those statues were moved, that would be teaching history. As it is, there isn't even a plaque to explain it, so it's just celebrating them.
