That's the main point of the protest. Staff and owners would be more than happy to stay home where it is safest, if their financial interests were being met. At the minute, it isn't clear that these needs will be met fully. These needs weren't met during furlough either, with a significant portion of hospitality income being tips which are unaccounted for during furlough. The Gov also didn't protect hospitality employees from predatory employers, many of whom made staff redundant or did other shady stuff to save money. West have already stated their intention to similarly shaft staff over the next 16 days.

This protest is not about people wanting a bevvy down the pub, and it's about something way more than this. It's about workers rights and a whole industry just wanting the decency of earlier notice and more clarity in decision-making. Otherwise it would have been a protest carried out by consumers rather than staff.
