The purpose of the protest wasn't to cause any disturbance to the council or Government, or destroy property. Most of these workers live and work in the city most days - they don't want to wreck the place. The ice achieved what it was intended to achieve, media attention to get a message to Sturgeon, in a peaceful manner.

The workers chose this protest because it was inexpensive, not destructive, and symbolic to them. The ice was to symbolise jobs "melting away" and the industry being "put on ice" again, this time for 16 days. The Scottish Licensed Trade Association have predicted 75% of pubs won't survive the pandemic. This means a lot to these people.

I'm not saying you feel this way, but I've found it funny how many of the statue guarding brigade have mocked this protest for being pointless because it simply melts away. I really can't tell if people want vandalism at protests or not.
