Many tenement buildings conceal voids and thin/one layer brick walls between flats. Often the 'press' (The alcove/shelving recess, often in the 'living room') is actually a lightly bricked up door, initially used so workmen could move between flats during construction. Each room bar the bathroom originally had a fireplace, so somewhere there will be a void for that, which may not have been properly bricked up. They often also have very creaky floorboards and little sound insulation between flats, or have had their sound insulation removed. Although tenements look like solid sandstone, the party walls are often brick, with an outer sandstone facade, esp the red sandstone ones.
