Essentially Sturgeon wanted to close pubs/bars and keep cafes open - but she made a complete hash of defining what a cafe actually was, so a lot of small cafes with a licence to sell bottled beer or a glass or wine had to close as the SNP effectively classed them as bars.

So then such cafes complained to the council and sought legal advice about opening and not serving alcohol, one cafe won their claim (Eusebi) and let lead to others opening but not serving alcohol (fair enough) and this made the SNP look a bit silly.

So - to get around it and not have the headache of the party embarrassing themselves again by getting definitions wrong, they’ve essentially allowed every establishment to open but not serve alcohol so the legal definition of a cafe/restaurant is now irrelevant for the circuit breaker lockdown.

I know there’s a love affair with the SNP and Sturgeon on this sub so this will get heavily downvoted, but she cocked this up - closing places without even consulting the scottish licenced trade association was just really bad leadership.

I’m in Shawlands and the stress the SNP put many small businesses and it’s employees through that are still closed until Monday is absolutely shameful. As far as I’m concerned she’s hit the lowest earning workers pockets hard and she needs to admits she’s made a mistake over it.
