Those are firedoors and yes, they are mandatory when they are to a living space. Kitchen, bathroom and cupboards don't have to be. You can certainly replace them with something more elegant (e.g. a more hidden spring-loaded mechanism into the frame) but the will need to be firedoors. Cost? £150-800 per door plus fitting, all depending on style and if you want glass etc.

Whilst you're looking into DIY, now is a good time to fit linked smoke and heat detectors. Failure to do so will void you home insurance when the legislation comes I to force (was Feb 2021 but now is Feb 2022).

We're having work done on our house which is why I know some of this.
