I've always bought/sold my cars privately through Facebook, Gumtree and Autotrader.

Think Autotrader is best generally because it fosters a more professional marketplace, usually gives more information and has filter options but also tends to be a bit more expensive.

Can easily check the MOT history if you Google it and that'll give you a fair idea what kind of things to look out for when inspecting. The cartalkUK subreddit should have a thread on any problems specific to certain models.

When looking at any car in the UK, age is important particularly on some models if they're prone to rust but I'd say that a full service history (FSH) is always the biggest draw for me to any car as it suggests it's been well looked after. I know Autotrader allows this as a filter and it's worth considering if buying an older second hand car.
