It's one of these official shared use paths, and a vital one at that, as there are barely any other ways of getting from the top end of town to the Clydeside (and vice versa) without going on the roads.

That said, you're right in that shared spaces rarely work and are a cop out to say we have a much bigger cycle "network" than really exists. The "Avenue" design of Sauchiehall street is going to be extended eastwards, up close to Buchanan Street I think but not quite touching it. Eventual plan is for other north-south roads to get the avenue treatment (Hope Street, Cambridge St, and Saltmarket if I remember right). So the city should *eventually* be a great place for cycling, once it's all done.
