I'm from Gartharmlock and used to run about the area growing up in the 90s and early 2000s. Easterhouse was and is a rough place, as was Gartharmlock, craigend and ruchazie where I currently live.

But the thing about rough places is that the day to day life isn't especially threatening or violent, so it makes sense that you have good memories there.

However, you also remember the poor quality housing, lack of opportunies and endemic poverty - and it's those things that push people into crime, out of boredom, or material needs. But not everybody is like that, even in a bad area, so it makes sense that you would have fond memories of the majority of people there - you where protected by youth, and your parents.

The place is definitely better now, the Fort opening in the early 2000s really helped - and got me my first job as well, without which the rest of my life could have been different. But it is still clearly economically depressed, suffers from relatively poor transport links, educational opportunities and higher level career chances.
