Actually, that is why I do it, I'm pretty sure as a child at some point I've dropped something behind me, or left an open packet of crisps lying at home and my parent, or teacher has told me that's not acceptable, and that it should be put in the bin.

I'm sure I've observed other people putting stuff in the bin, and I've copied what they're doing. Then as I've got older I've been able to form my own opinions on the matter based on what I've been taught.

If I grew up without anyone telling me what was and wasn't socially acceptable, then there's a fair chance I'd be a total miscreant, as would anyone.

If people weren't "scalded" for stuff then I think they'd behave very differently.

If there were no punishments for theft, or assault, or drink driving, a lot of people would quite happily just take what they wanted, punch people they disagreed with and then drive home drunk.

We're all products of our upbringing and the society we live in, not so much of the architecture that surrounds us.
