Comment	Proud g-hill punter here. It’s frustrating because most of the people that throw in their two cents about xenophobia etc. don’t know what it’s like to live in Govanhill. It’s the same people who come from Strathbungo and the nicer areas of the south side to set up their nice wee shop on Victoria Road to make a difference in the community then fuck off home back across Pollokshaws road. It’s bullshit being accused of racism when the uncomfortable fact that rouge landlords have squeezed as many Roma families into their dilapidated flats and they just simply do not dispose of their rubbish properly and clearly don’t give a fuck about the general hygiene of the area. That’s the absolute bare bones of it. That’s not racist. When you look out your back window and see it every single day and have rats crawling about your house because of it, you can understand why it’s fucking infuriating to be accused of xenophobia by people that don’t even live in the area. Throw in the fucking gammon and the Facebook maw rubbernecks who are using the whole thing further their anti immigration shite (half of which ALSO are not from the area) who are just ramping up the tension. It’s an absolute clusterfuck. Absolutely 0 has been done to tackle the rouge landlordism which has been prevalent for fucking decades. You cannot shy away from the fact that the Roma community have a massive part to play too. The Irish /Bangladeshi/ Indian / Pakistani / Polish + numerous others have all immigrated to the area and been fucking treated with the exact same amount of hatred and suspicion. The Roma clearly have a more insular culture and that’s not surprising given their history of being ostracised throughout Europe, but it seems the help in the community is there and a lot of people feel they aren’t doing enough to take it. Sorry if this was a bit of an all over the place rant but it’s so so much more than people just being racist. Scum landlords + insular immigrant population + inability to dispose of rubbish + gammon + crime = Govanhill. The same bi-yearly news cycle will continue and nothing will get done.
