Comment | Generally children are separated from adults for three reasons:
1. Child protection;
1. Attention span; and
1. Physical limitations.
For the last, certain techniques are banned for children and if an adult were to land on a kid...that's bad!
There are sometimes exceptions (e.g. bigger event) but often the kids will remain in a sectioned area for their own safety.
All that said, I have been on the mats with kids, just not as young as 5.
There's at least one kids Taekwondo club in the east end, the Griphouse did have a few juniors at one time (not sure on age), there's a few Aikido clubs that had a kids section (but I think that started at 8).
Any martial arts class for kids that young is going be more of a games/play thing, rather than standing there and doing drills until your arms pop off; so I wouldn't stress too much about _which_ one you can get. Just ask about insurance, child protection, governing body affiliation etc. |
