I'm Aussie, but live in Glasgow these days - and I spent a few years in Paris a while back, so here's my 2 cents' worth...

If you've not travelled properly before, Glasgow would be the easier choice re language, culture, and food. And it's **much** cheaper. Here, you'd enjoy heaps of nightlife, music and Art and perhaps get to know the city fairly well. Despite what you might have heard about violence here, it's more just between local rivals - so there's really nothing to fear as a foreigner.

Paris is quite intimidating at first, and the locals aren't nearly as welcoming as folk in other French cities - particularly if you don't speak French well. If I had my chance again, I'd go to Lyon, Toulouse, or Marseille for a proper French experience over dingy Paris any day.
