Comment | I live a few blocks from there, and Govanhill has a terrible reputation among people who don't live here and who'd probably struggle to find it on a map, but love to repeat stuff that someone else (who also doesn't live here) told them, because it allows them to be all superior, and, often, racist. Everyone seems to know someone who definitely really does exist and totally lives in Govanhill, and hates it because of all the crime/rubbish/rats/graffiti/etc that is totally the fault of russians/roma/teenage hookers/asians/indians/whatever (but they are totally not racist, but). The reality is that there are a few parts of Govanhill which have had problems, largely due to shitty landlords and overcrowding, but there is an on-going clamp down on that, and efforts being made to improve the area. I've seen rubbish in the streets, and some illegal dumping, but in 3 years here I've seen zero crime (apart from an abusive ex of a neighbour letting the air out of her tires, once, because she kicked him out), one rat, and hundreds of every day acts of decency and friendship. I've seen more rubbish, dumping, and crime in many other areas of Glasgow, including may of the frequently-lauded 'posh' areas. I've never seen street violence, never been stopped or threatened in the street, never had any damage to my car or seen or heard of a house or car break in. I cannot speak directly to the quality of that junction/street, as I live a little further up Victoria road, but Govanhill as a whole is excellent, and I've loved living here. |
