Vast areas of the south east of Glasgow contain deposits of COPR: chromium ore processing residue, from the former White's works. This contains chromium (VI), a horribly toxic heavy metal. It leaches into groundwater, contaminates soil, and makes dust much more dangerous. It's also difficult to remediate on a large scale, although there is a lot of research directed at this.
