Comment | As long as no one is forced into it, volunteering is great for people, charities, communities and some organisations.
Volunteering keeps communities going- ever been treated by a first aider at T in the Park? Probably a volunteer (the charity they volunteer for gets paid, not them). Given 50p to someone bagpacking at Tesco? Another volunteer. The receptionist at the Beatson - oh look, another volunteer.
People get different things from volunteering. Plenty of people I know (including myself) have got into paid work through experience gained when volunteering. Doing it voluntarily means it fits around you and is more flexible. Other people use it as a way of helping their mental health as it keeps them busy. Some people want to give something back. |
