Big enough to have exciting culture / venues / museums / institutions. Small enough to get around by bicycle. Public transport isn't great.ost areas are safe enough for a young single female, I would recommend to live in a flatshare at first before you rent alone (flatshares are great anyway). I am a southsider and live how international the place is. On top of all of that there are beaches and hills pretty close, and amazing landscapes worthy of longer trips. Making friends is fairly easy.
