We've been sold the dream of American style suburbia, except the gardens are tiny, the houses are tiny, and the weather is too awful to do anything in the garden.

I totally agree with your point about shops too. The most livable place I've ever lived was South Korea: every neighbourhood is walkable, and even the countryside has more amenities than you'd expect.
