A picture tells a thousand words. So the oak would run vertically and act as a frame and support for the rack? All the load is downwards through the length of the oak board?
What is the existing varnished cabinetry in this pic made out of? It looks like Sapele faced plywood? That is not solid is it? I am wondering if a fixing you put into that through your oak board will just rip right through the plywood when it is under load if the oak boards are not sitting on some kind of footing or plate?
You want something that will transfer all that load on to a wide plate on the floor. Central Sawmill have (or had last time I checked) loads of ash which will be cheaper than the oak and just as hard.
