I lived in a drafty single glazed, solid stone house in Strathblane at the bottom of a Glen with only one working coal fireplace. It was so cold that my sister came to visit me once and burst into tears.
My top tip for you if it is super cold is wear a hat, including to bed. I often slept in a thinsulate fleece hat that I used for winter hillwalking.
That house taught me that there is nothing romantic about coal fires and also that baked potatoes (made in a coal fire) never become boring.
