If some people want them gone so much and some people want them kept so much why not just compromise, change the text for the minority who care enough to bother reading it to say "Slave Trader and Tobacco Lord John McWhatever, prominent in his time but now controversial for his attitudes to race ".
A new plaque will be cheaper and surely be a more honest representation of history for both sides, especially considering how keen we are to bury Scotland's racism problems past and present. |
