Steamers work well but I didn't want to risk damaging the plaster and I've had some nasty scalds off them in the past.

I used a chemical stripper called Zinsser Dif with a garden sprayer to dissolve the paste underneath then scraped it off in sheets with a paint scraper. Can get the Dif for £9 a bottle at Screwfix and should get 1 or 2 rooms done per bottle.

Tips would be:

•scrape off as many of the big chips as you can before soaking the walls, will help the chemicals soak through to bottom layer.

•Score the wall as much you can without going through to plaster before soaking, either with a Stanley knife or tool like a Zinsser paper tiger (£12ish from Screwfix)

•Bottle says 2 coats, I'd say do minimum 3 and then leave it at least an hour before starting stripping. Scraping gets quicker the longer you leave it on.

•once scraping if it dries out, sponge + soap water should help redissolve anything that's not shifting so easily.

...Jeez who knew I'd get so excited over removing wallpaper
