Basically in the 70s people decided to start putting splinters of wood sandwiched between two thick layers of paper to give a textured look to their walls/ceilings and cover up uneven areas. Problem is, the stuffs pretty much indestructible and the paper usually tears into thousands of tiny prices when you remove it, instead of coming off in nice big sheets like with other paper.
