I don't think that's an entirely accurate and fair assessment. People don't move to Govanhill or Brooklyn in the past *because* it was rough. It's not like they moved because they wanted to be edgy. They moved for economic reasons too. The "seeds" of gentrification are most often planted by (a) younger people who simply can't afford to buy their home anywhere else so they move to a rougher area and decide to make it work, (b) artist / creative folk who are on lower incomes and are attracted by the prospect of low rents.

So really it doesn't happen because hipsters want to be edgy. It comes because the current economic / housing system fucks over most of us.
