Comment | This definitely needs to happen. It's the kind of 'chickens coming home to roost' scenario which has been brewing for decades. Contributing factors (imo):
\- Negligent landlords
\- Sellers failing to disclose major structural issues (this only became illegal in 2017!)
\- Home reports being absolutely worthless.
\- No pro-active approach from successive councils.
The council need to be identifying problem closes and telling the owners "Sort this out and we'll make a substantial contribution (at least 50%). If you don't sort it out by (insert date) we will do it and bill you."
In the longer term it should be compulsory for a full building report/survey to be produced say every 2 years, to be provided to owners and any prospective purchaser.
The music is about to stop and those without a seat - myself included - will have to take the pain, paying for the negligence and/or fraudulence of previous owners but it's the only way to have a clean break and fix the system. |
