Try Western Lettings (they cover more than just the West End), they seem pretty good.

Check that any deposit is going to be held correctly in a deposit scheme, the landlord is registered etc etc.

When you first move in, check the damage list. Then check the flat and note down *everything* that's been missed on the list, no matter how minor. Scuff on the wall? Goes on the list. Carpet lifting in one corner? Goes on the list.

Photograph *everything* and keep the copies safe (maybe send them to the agents via a downloadable link so you and they have a record).

If anything is to be replaced/repaired, get that in writing.

Not so much about the landlord/agent being a massive arsehole, more about three months down forgetting what was agreed.
