Definitely this. Not sound related but I replaced a bathroom ceiling via this method last year. Old plaster was sagging but it was lathe and plaster. Couldn't be fucked ripping it down so screwed batons into then joists then put up sheets of plasterboard, skimmed the joints then painted it. A day's work and cost about £50 all in
