I feel like tipping is such an American thing and makes me feel incredibly guilty when I don't have anything to tip the food driver with. But then I just have to ask myself, do I tip my mailman for bringing me mail? Do I tip my Amazon driver? Aren't people getting paid for these jobs already? Why do I have to pay extra? Even in restaurants, I don't get it. If any the people that should get a tip are the cooks as they cooked my food, the waiter just brought it over, took the plates and printed the bill for me. And at the end of the day, the waiter might make even more than the cook does.
Thing is, where does it stop? Should we just start tipping everyone? Should we tip our cashier for being nice to us? Our dentist? Slip a couple to our GP? Should I get tips from all the pupils I teach for how good of a lesson I delivered every day? For making it extra fun? No...cuz that's my job. I already get paid for that.
Unfortunately there are places in the world where slipping money to your nurse and surgeon and anesthesiologist before undergoing a procedure is common practice as it guarantees you waking up afterwords. Or buying your degree from your lecturer. I don't want to live in a place like that, and I'm hoping Scotland will never become a place like that. Employers should pay enough for you to be able to live and not become homeless if you don't get a tip. If that's not the case, you should look for another job.
