There was a time when nowhere in Glasgow was allowed to serve alcohol on a Sunday, apart from the steam boats going up and down the Clyde. That's where the expression 'steaming' for getting/being drunk comes from. (Story told by old man in a pub in Partick so must be 100 % true)
