As someone who didn't have a car at the start of lockdown and got one halfway through for a job, you are totally right. Having a car has changed my life and keeps me from feeling trapped; I was a public transportation person through and through, but not only are services late, dodgy, and generally a bit miserable -- now with covid it's also dangerous. The car's changed all that: I can move around without worrying about getting my neighbors sick, and I don't have to deal with these "reduced services" so many bus companies are running these days. Getting my license during covid was one hardest things, as you're finding now, thanks to increased demand, the cancellation of tests during the worst lockdown months, and the insane backlog of driving lessons (everyone I phoned last year told me they were booked for about 8 months). To be honest, if I were you I would stick with it as learning to drive will open up a whole slew of opportunities for you even beyond covid times. It's a shit time to learn and take the tests, but I guarantee you'll thank yourself once you're on the other side. Good luck!
