What the others said re all the added costs, and/but even just 1 or 2 km from the city centre in any direction will mean lower rent and much lower council tax. At that distance, I reckon the walk into town would be ok when compared to the savings.

If you were a bit further from the city centre - particularly to the east, rent and council tax would absolutely plummet, against only the cost of a monthly bus ticket. In my case I pay £94 for a 10-week pass.
