Keys that only work intermittently give me the absolute fear! It could be that they got a new set cut and that key isn't a good fit. That sometimes happens (speaking as someone who frequently got keys cut for other staff for my old place of work).
Have you tried pulling the key out ever so slightly before turning it? Sometimes this can happen with shoddily cut keys.
