Depending on the state of the wall we used Easy Fill then gypsum plaster- a rougher grey one followed by a smoother pink/brown finishing one. But we’ve recently switched to using a premixed finishing plaster rather than the bags of powder because it’s easier to get it smooth.

Thanks! I’ve actually loved learning to do it. Much more enjoyable than stripping paint from woodwork.

Ok that’s good to know that less invasive is better. To be honest, we’ve got lots of other original features- lots of mad cornicing and ceiling roses (we even found old shutters in one room and a blocked up fireplace in another). So unless the pattern in the hallway is Greek Thompson (which is isn’t) I’m not sure it’s worth conserving the way it is at the moment just because it’s far too dark for what we’re looking for.

Someone else mentioned needing to use febond blue grit - I’ll look into it! Thanks.

I’m totally up for repainting it and I’m quite confident that we could get it to look quite good but it would have to be more of an ‘homage’ to what is there now.

If there’s anything else that you think is worth keeping an eye out for, I’d love to know!

Thanks for your advice, it’s really helpful
