There is also a pathological hatred for cyclists here (and across the UK) that is bizarre and cultural (never experienced anything like it in several other countries I've cycled in).
Do any visible low paid job in public here and you will get people being a prick to you. Lot of angry, unhappy people here who take out their frustrations on what they perceive as the "lowest" in society, starting with homeless and working up through minimum wage workers.
Also, if you're not white, is an added incentive for the above types to be a bit racist too.
I think you hit the nail on the head with your bag comment. Reduce your visibility as a worker as much as possible. Keep dodging those pricks on the road and best of luck comrade.
