| Comment | all the working canal infrastructure in Scotland is owned by Scottish Canals & they are all also Scheduled Monuments, therefore metal detecting or magnet fishing on them without the consent of HES is a crime. However the bit you are talking about is a disused part of the Ardrossan canal and not scheduled, so you can legally detect there with simply permission of the owner. Your best bet is to contact Scottish Canals, also GCC council, and probably the West of Scotland Archaeology Service too for advice for embarking on metal detecting at that spot. Also best practice is to report any artefacts t Treasure Trove as all found archaeological artefacts are property of the Crown under Scots Law. |
