If you've just passed and are under 27, around £1000 will be normal to high. I passed at 26 and my first year insurance with direct line was £800. Right now I spend £200 on my monthly car finance, £40 a month for my insurance (I'm 33 and driving for nearly 7 years now), £8 a month for my gap insurance, £150 a year for road tax. I do PCP so I rarely have MOT costs as I tend to trade up before the car needs it's first 3 year mark MOT. Right now, I work about 5 mins from home and work from home a lot. I'm in the southside but my missus stays in Renfrew so I do a fair bit of driving atm. Will spend about £30 a month on fuel. I don't work in town anymore but when I did, I was around £1800 a year for parking alone.

So all in all, unexpected costs excluded, I'm about £3500 a year now that I don't pay for parking. I spent about half of that per year in public transport before I could drive. (2 zone zonecard that was £150 a month at the time in 2014).

For the extra costs, it's worth it to me for the convenience. I can drive to see my mates that stay a bit far away, jump over to my gfs house if we want to stay there or do things with her pals, etc. Last Saturday when the weather was lovely, I rounded up a few pals and drove down to the Linn and had a BBQ. The convenience is priceless for me and well, well worth the extra I pay.

I also used to work really unsociable hours, so public transport was really shit for me, despite only commuting about 10 miles away. Would finish Sunday mornings at 7am and wouldn't get home til 10am due to Sunday service.

It's up to yourself to weigh it up and see if the convenience is worth the price.
